Abstract

This paper focuses on the cost analysis of offshore wind power system using Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) based HVDC or Modular Multilevel Matrix Converter (M3C) based fractional frequency transmission (FFT). Capital investment and long-term costs due to unavailability, Operation & Maintenance and power loss are analysed. The total cost is broken down into elements and those have larger impact on the overall cost are highlighted. Cost comparison between the two technologies is presented. Economical breakeven distance is analysed for schemes with different power ratings. In addition, sensitivity analysis is conducted considering discount rate, energy price, capacity factor, wind farm life time and wind turbine type to gain insight into the overall cost.
