Abstract

Introduction to the book and exhibition catalogue published to mark Rowntree's centenary. The essay attempts to sum up some of what is distinctive in the work of Rowntree. It looks at his relation to the 1930s tradition established by artist-designers such as Ravilious and Bawden, and the new directions Rowntree took in his work abroad and in the Fine Art department at the University if Newcastle.
