Abstract

This paper contributes to the discussion of female aging in middle life. It extends prior research that opposed the mainstream medical discourse on menopause with the feminist discourse (Corus and Saatcioglu 2012) by showing the capacity of women to transcend their unproductive and declining body and reveal themselves beyond their body. In this process, becoming “strangers to themselves” helps women to distance themselves from the patriarchal assumptions that associate them uniquely with their bodies. In this context, the paper raises the question of how the empowerment testimonials of women
opinion leaders can support or clash with regular women in their journeys to discover the other within themselves.
