Abstract

Stefano started filming Alin's life in 2014. At that time, Alin was a teenager living in precarious housing conditions on the outskirts of Madrid, and Stefano was a PhD candidate working on youth migration. Their experimental collaboration continued for a couple of years, involving Alin's friend, Lauren, and his older brother. Then Stefano's doctoral scholarship ended, and the prospect of producing a collaborative documentary movie went on standby. Over the years, however, Alin, Lauren and Stefano kept fantasising about working together on a documentary movie project, each with different motivations and positionalities. Unfortunately, when the opportunity presented itself, the COVID-19 pandemic broke out shortly before they could meet in Madrid. During the pandemic, Alin returned with his family to his mother's home village in Romania. So, towards the end of 2020, Stefano sent him a smartphone and invited him to record a video diary about his life in "the ghost town".
