A performance and emission investigation of a marine diesel fuelled with B20, B50 and B100 microalgae (Schizochytrium sp.) oil without chemical additive

Abstract

This study investigates the performance and emissions of a marine diesel engine fuelled with a raw microalga (Schizochytrium sp.) oil. The engine was fuelled with B20 (20% raw algae, 80% diesel), B50 (50% raw algae, 50% diesel) and B100 (100% raw algae oil) without chemical additives. The results were compared with diesel oil (DO), and at full load, the brake power of algae oil and its blends decreased by 26%. However, at lower loads, similar brake power results were observedfor all test fuels. The BTE of algae oil has avanation of -22% and + 1 0 % when compared to DO. The algae oil results showed an increase in BSFC of 38%. The most critical finding from this research study and analysis is the significant reduction in NOx and CO emission values for the algae oil, in most test conditions. Therefore, these findings demonstrate that algae oil is the optimum alternative fuel for diesel engines and a promising solution to diesel engine emissions.
