Abstract

This text explores transitional justice's journey from its origins in the Southern Cone of Latin America, regarding the transition from dictatorships to democracies, to its current application in post-conflict settings. Through an analysis of the main needs and objectives of societies in these episodes of political and legal change; the nature, type and extent of the abuses committed; and the institutional capacity to implement measures of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-repetition, this piece offers a critical analysis of the opportunities and risks that arise with the application of transitional justice in post-conflict scenarios.
