Abstract

This thematic study of sacred space in the Synoptic Gospels introduces a framework for understanding sacred space and an approach to the investigation of the theme in the Synoptic texts. When considering evidence in texts, it is important to foreground the non-material nature of the sacred, and how that invisible reality is articulated. Questions concerning where and how the sacred is being located in the Synoptic texts are addressed, paying special attention to features of the sacred landscape that are agreed across all three accounts, as well as distinctive features that occur in two accounts, or one. Spatial distinctions in the texts are considered in greater detail, such as those between Heaven and Earth, the Kingdom of God/Heaven/Satan, Land, and Temple. Each is discussed with a view to addressing how multi-optic views of space contribute to an ‘education of attention’ to the sacred in the material world.
