Abstract

This article examines the creation of co-presence in digital performance, drawing on three examples: Punchdrunk’s online version of Sleep No More in 2012; Covid-era teaching at the University of Birmingham in 2020; and the hybrid International Shakespeare Conference in 2022. It argues that co-presence is not dependent on sharing the same physical space but rather on the experience of direct, human-to-human contact.
