Abstract
This article explores the staging of the communion wafer, its transformation and its ontological status in a Middle English and a Burgundian play. Each of these plays focus upon the role and condition of the Eucharistic wafer and its genesis, whether in Biblical or allegorical terms, and we explore the challenges and potential of the live performance of these pieces of medieval theatre. We draw on our analyses of the scripts, of medieval manuscript illuminations and other types of medieval art, and of our own experiences of the plays in our contemporary performances of them.

OPEN ACCESS COMPLIANCE NOTE: This journal was the most appropriate venue for publishing this research. The publisher has contacted me to advise the following – “At the moment, we’re asking that articles are not placed in open repositories – because of the conflict with our general OA policy – and suggesting that there’s a link to the book’s page on our website, for information. We are however keeping this policy under constant review, in the light of changes and developments in the field”.***UPDATE 27.9.23: We requested, and received, additional funding from the funder of the research project which gave rise to this article (the SNSF) to make the article open access through the publisher's website. I have therefore updated the Pure record to reflect this.***
