Abstract

A collection of 27 chapters plus intro and conc, comprising over 247,000 words altogether, setting out the state of the field in research into C19th British literature and science. Includes comprehensive coverage of genres and scientific disciplines by experts in the field from the UK, USA, Canada and Europe. Each chapter combines a synoptic overview of the topic with original research and suggestions for further research. My own chapter is on 'Natural History, Evolution and Ecology', is over 11,500 words, plus bibliography. It is the most comprehensive analysis of work on literature's engagement with biology across the C19th available in an essay format. I also co-wrote the introduction, and co-edited the entire volume, as both editors read and commented on all the chapters in the book.
