Abstract
The role of the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) is a statutory position in English schools. This chapter will provide an overview of how schools can consider using ecological approaches to optimise the SENCO role to overcome the adversities often faced by children with special educational needs (SEN). It provides an overview of the SENCO role and how the role provides support in all layers of the ecology of inclusive education that surrounds the child. Finally, it will be argued that SENCOs can, and want to play an important role in developing and strengthening this ecology by working within and between the different systems that surround the child at the centre of this ecology.
