Abstract

At the University of Birmingham, we assure that sustainability concept has been integrated in engineering education. The sustainability concept has been enhanced in railway infrastructure design module where students learn and apply the concept thoroughly to engineering design of highspeed rail systems. As a core component of the course, the student coursework projects have been designed to take into account the sustainability aspect in every element of railway system design (from raw materials to production, construction, operation, maintenance, and end of life). Students needs to perform the railway design to meet not only safety requirements but to also set new targets towards low carbon emissions and maximum societal impacts.
