Abstract

This chapter explores some of the core building blocks that should underpin research on manufacturing. This includes exploring the tensions between research on manufacturing that is positioned around firms and firm behaviour compared with a focus on products. The variegated nature of manufacturing firms is exploring including different motivations and forms of value including non-price values. Existing approaches to understanding the geographical configuration of production tend to adopt a multi-scalar approach. This approach is critiqued, and an alternative approach based on the concept of scalar-plasticity developed. In this approach, scale is social constructed and enacted by companies. The chapter explores manufacturing and new forms of risk including the risks related to the development of a cyber-energy-production plexus. The chapter concludes by discussing socially responsible approaches to manufacturing research.
