Abstract

The third and final video essay on the philosophies underpinning Greta Gerwig's LADY BIRD (2017), THE LADY BIRD BOOK OF IRIGARAY explores - with the help of Lucy Bolton's brilliant writing on Luce Irigaray - the French feminist linguist-philosopher's notions of verticality, subjective freedom and self-determination. For study purposes only. In conjunction with LADY BIRD: SELF-DETERMINATION FOR A NEW CENTURY published by Routledge in November 2022. The appropriation and 'pinkening' of the opening crawl responds to Irigaray's call to re-fashion the symbolic order of patriarchy into something more overtly feminist.
