Martin Toms’ main research interests fall around the 'grass roots' of sport and participation of young people in the dynamic sports/coaching environment. With experience of research at school, club and professional level he explores the coach-athlete dynamic from a sociological perspective. As one of the joint authors of the SportsCoachUK report on 'Participant Development', his work explores the interplay of the 'social' within the Bio-Psycho-Social domain of participation and talent in sport.

Dr Toms’ main research interests include: participant and talent development; influence of the family on sports participation; sociology of coaching; sports ethnography; cricket and golf (participation patterns/coaching); rural sport and club sport provision; youth sport participation; and talent development pathways and provision.
